FAQs

What types of pets do you treat?

We primarily treat dogs and cats. If you have a different pet, please call us to inquire.

What information should I bring to my pet’s first visit?

If your pet has previous medical records or vaccine history, please bring those. You can also bring in a stool sample for a discount on testing!

How long will my visit take?

A typical appointment lasts 30 minutes to an hour but may be longer if additional procedures or diagnostics are needed.

How do I know if my pet needs veterinary care?

Pets can’t always tell us when they’re feeling unwell. If you notice any of these signs, please contact us immediately:

  • Eye irritation or squinting
  • Refusal to eat
  • Vomiting more than once
  • Bloating
  • Straining to eliminate (especially in cats)
  • Difficulty breathing or coughing
  • Excessive itching or wounds
  • Seizures, collapse, or lethargy
  • Paralysis
  • Bloody diarrhea

What if my pet has an emergency after hours?

For after-hours emergencies, we recommend Steel City Emergency Vets or Veterinary Specialists of Birmingham.

How often should my pet have exams and bloodwork?

We recommend annual exams for most pets and twice-yearly exams for seniors (dogs over seven, cats over nine). Bloodwork should be checked at least annually or more frequently for pets on medication, with existing health problems, or undergoing sedation.

When should I bring my new puppy or kitten in for their first exam?

Bring your new pet in as soon as you adopt them for a wellness check and parasite screening. If they’re 6 weeks or older, they’ll need to start their vaccination series.

What preventative care do puppies and kittens need?

Puppies and kittens need a series of vaccinations and wellness checks every 4 weeks, starting at 6 weeks of age. See our Wellness page for more details.

At what age should I spay/neuter my pet?

The ideal age varies by breed and gender. We generally recommend spaying/neutering cats and small-to-medium dogs at six months. Consult with us about the best timing for your pet.

How do I refill my pet’s medications?

You can refill medications through our online store, at a local pharmacy, or by calling us directly. Please allow 4-24 hours for refills.

What heartworm and flea prevention options do you offer?

We offer a variety of options, including Sentinel, Heartgard, Advantage Multi, Proheart, Nexgard, Bravecto, and Seresto collars. We’ll help you choose the best one for your pet’s lifestyle and needs.

Boarding and Facilities

Where will my pet be kept during their stay?

Pets needing monitoring or IV therapy stay in our hospitalization area. Stable pets awaiting care are in our lower boarding facility. Daycare and boarding pets stay in our newly renovated upper facility.
